Suave's Republique Cricket

Look out chaps, this young buck looks half decent..

I’m one of those freaky fellas, what bowls with the wrist!

This young buck is Adil Rashid.

He has been touted as the next legspinning giant of world cricket. (He’ll obviously have to wait until Cricket With Balls Very Own Nice Bryce McGain retires)

I think that’s pushing it a little.

He’s more likely to be the next Nasser Hussain (Nasser was a very tidy legspinner who could bat, til he got the yips).

England Lions (our second XI, better known as “The England Hedgehogs”), are playing in India’s domestic competetion “The Duleep Trophy”.

Young Adil is performing rather swimmingly.

In his first warm up game, against Mumbai Cricket Association XI, he scored 54 & 0.

His bowling however is a little worse, taking 1-64 in 14overs.

The first game proper in the Duleep Trophy, he really came in to his own.

Top scored with 40 in the first innings, and took 1-17 from 10 overs, which is pretty f*cking handy, if you ask me.

In the second innings, he took 2-3, from 1.5 overs to leave “The England Hedgehogs” a score of 297 to win.

Michael Carberry of Hampshire, took up the mantle and scored a cracking 112, whilst ably supported by Michael Yardy of Sussex, and Ed Joyce of Middlesex, each with 50’s.

Then came the “next big thing”, to finish things off, with 24* from 20 balls.

A little information for the stattos of the world

Rashid, was the first (UPDATED) local born Asian player to ever represent Yorkshire CC.

He averages just shy of 40 with the bat in first class cricket, with a highest score of 108. (he now bats at no6)

And just over 35 with the ball, with best figures of 7/75. On his first class debut, he took 6-67.

He fields at backward point.

He’s not 20 until next week.

If he can develop his legspinning skills in India, during this tournament, we could drop the Sikh Of Tweak, and have a fella that averages four times as much with the bat, and is almost as good with the ball, and who can field when required.

He could be the first proper legspinning all-rounder, since Mr Off White, himself, Richie Benaud.

Exciting times, ahead..

Are you sure Rashid is the first Asian to represent Yorkshire. What about Sachin Tendulkar?

Good point, I should say that he is the first local born Asian to ever represent Yorkshire CCC.

Actually, Ajmal Shahzad & Ismail Dawood (both local born Asian lads) played for Yorkshire CCC first. But you’re getting closer…

Hi Kenny,

In four day cricket, young buck played his first game just over a month before Ajmal, on the 19th Jul 2006.
Ajmal’s first class debut, was 30-8-2006.

But you’re right about, Ismail.. I’d forgotten all about him..

AJ first played for Yorkshire in 2004. Injuries delayed his FC debut until just after Adil.

I suppose you could say Adil was the first Yorkshire born player of Asian heritage to make his first class debut for Yorkshire. But that doesn’t really trip off the tongue does it?

But whatever the exact headline label you want to use, he remains a great prospect, but one that needs to be kept out of England’s hands for a while yet. Their record with developing spinners (Panesar apart) isn’t the best.

Good point, Kenny..

I would like to see him have another season with yorkshire, before playing for England..

I’d like to see him work on his bowling this year, he seems to be batting like an opener at the moment!

It’d be nice if he get his FC average below 30.
